Avocado Shake: the green iced mother

It's Sugar High Friday, the theme is ice and thanks to Sarah, I've had a certain song spinning around in my head for the past fortnight.

Inspired by my first ever venture into the land of sweet avocado, I got out the blender to recreate the rich creamy green concoction known as the Avocado Shake at home.

Avocado with condensed milk sounds bizarre to the uninitiated, but if you like avocado, trust me. It's good. Avocado can be sweet. Have you ever tried it spread on toast with a trickle of honey? It's fantastic.

An avocado shake should be thick like a frappe. Sure your brain may be overloading, but hey, it's a fruit. Why should strawberries and bananas get to have all the frappe fun?

Avocado Shake
Vary ratios to taste and preference

One medium avocado
8 large ice cubes
3 tablespoons condensed milk
1/3 cup milk

Place all ingredients into a blender and whizz until the ice cubes are crushed and the drink is thick and frothy. Pour into a tall glass with a straw, or savour and share it in a series of shots. It's rich stuff. Share the fortune.

  1. I remember reading a post about the 'secret life of avocadoes' on the traveler's lunchbox. At that time, it seemed my only obsession was to make it myself but then i forgot. Si the least i can say is that i'm glad you wrote something about it to remind me of that delicious thing i haven't made YET.

PS i read the article in which you describe your first encounter with sweet avocado and i fell in love with the bright sticky rice (love sticky rice SO SO much).

Anyway sorry for that long comment.

  4. We have avocado shake in Brazil. Often with milk and sugar. If using condensed milk it often goes in the freezer to be served as a cold dessert.

  5. This just sounds so refreshing, Helen. And such a good use for avocadoes, since I always have a few extra just asking to get used up!
