Southern Cross Hotel, St Peters

calamari
Salt and pepper calamari

Following persistent natterings about my experiences at Oscars in Pyrmont, Veruca Salt and I (along with A and A) decided to head to its sister restaurant Oscars Grill at the Southern Cross Hotel in St Peters. We find it on a corner block along the semi-industrial Princess Highway, a large but meagrely-lit car park provided behind the suburban-hotel.

Inside, it's furnished in a somewhat similar fashion to Oscars with plenty of stained laquered wood, a sprinkling of bar stools and another brick-finished bar. There are also pool tables, a large sports bar, and the usual TV screens showing the TAB.

mojito
Mojito $10.00
Bacardi, fresh mint and limes muddled and topped with soda

We start with a tasting platter of choose-your-own canapes, snacking on salt and pepper calamari dressed with mayonnaise, discs of chorizo, and butterflied garlic prawns. These are washed down with refreshing mojitos (hurrah for cocktail happy hours) which is particularly generous with Bacardi.

ribeye steak
Premium Rib Eye on the Bone 400gm $25.00
Certified Aberdeen Angus rib eye with garlic and shallot croquette potato

All four of us end up having exactly the same thing: the premium rib eye on the bone. It's a no-nonsense steak with big fat gridlines from the grill and a bone that is gnawed on when noone is looking.

The croquette potato reminds me of a pineapple fritter, but it's more like a donut of mashed potato that's been crumbed and deep-fried.

It's one for the locals with $10 ribs on Monday nights and $10 sirloin steaks (300g) on Wednesday nights. And apparently they're famous for their baby back pork ribs in hickory sauce with chips for $16.

  1. Possibly gross, but that croquette is really making me crave Japanese style croquettes. Oh, the yumminess. The calamari looks delish too.

  2. That's a steak all right. How was the s&p calamari? Looks like the coating's falling off a bit. Was it nice and crisp?

  4. Hey Helen-
I didn't even know the Japanese had an obsession with croquettes. I do find it odd though since... potatoes aren't that abundant in much of Asian cuisine. The few times I've had them, though, peas in the mashed potatoes and the outside so crisp but the inside a gentle mush of yummy potatoes... heaven. Now to find a place to get them o_O ... can't be too hard, right? Right??? Hahaha.
