The $5 steak seems to be cropping up everywhere. Get them in with the promise of a cheap feed and hopefully they'll loiter over drinks, seems to be the marketing strategy.
We inexplicably ended up at the legendary Forresters, where the steak and mash is a mere $5, nay, $4 if you join up as a member online beforehand.
Steak with mashed potatoes and gravy $5.00 ($4.00 for members)
In an inspired flash of gastronomic astuteness, I had my steak rare rather than the usual medium rare. Alas, a $5 steak is still a $5 steak.
Having said that, the accompanying enormous quantity of (average) mashed potato would surely satiate any starving sumo wrestler. For a handful of change, this is incredible value.
And Forresters wasn't short of any patrons either. The place was jam-packed with large group bookings and a motley assortment of businessworkers, students and yuppies. There is significant space devoted to dining and tables, and upstairs a warren of pokey rooms confuse the stumbling drinker in search of the bathrooms.
There are a number of other (more expensive) dishes available including kangaroo risotto, linguini with feta and olives and typical pub grub like beef and guinness pie. One suspects that it's the $5 specials which are the main drawcard though, and for the hungry beer-drinker, a $5 steak is just too good a deal to pass up.

ReplyDeleteI had meant to put up a post about Forrester a long time ago. We did find the steak done with various consistency. A friend ordered rare and it came up as medium rare. Sometimes it's vice versa. We had to do a couple of check-run to be sure we didnt grab someone else's steak! I really should put the post up. It's already 1 year late!
I've found that it's ok for a $5 steak. However the quality and cooking leave a lot to be desired (even for a fiver).
ReplyDeleteStrawberry Hills is probably the best in this space, and it's open until 3am.
