Good Living Growers' Markets

Baby shimeji mushrooms

Last month I missed the Good Living Growers' Markets for the first time in 2006: it was a very sad realisation indeed.

So I was determined not to miss this month's one, which was happily bathed in glorious yellow sunshine. It was t-shirt and shorts weather, more akin to summer than the second calendar day of spring.

I went a little crazy with the photos this month. Perhaps absence does make the heart grow fonder...

Ahhh seasonal produce. What a novel concept!

I've tried this once before. It had a beautiful sharp tangy flavour, but at $100/kg it was a rare treat.

With the current cupcake craze at fever pitch, Whisk and Pin's latest addition to their range is a cupcake mix which comes complete with icing mixture and flower decorations.

I was drooling at the sight of the Papillon roquefort at the rear left (and by the way, the Providores' Market in Alexandria sells Roquefort for $70/kg compared to $90/kg at David Jones Food Hall).

raspberry jam
Chilcotin raspberry jam from Anne Jam $7.00 or 3 for $18.00

After sampling the Chilcotin raspberry jam for months, I finally succumbed to some jammy goodness. Made from organic raspberries, it's a pure jam of 60% fruit and 40% sugar. Berry bits are aplenty and the taste is pure raspberry sweetness. I've been having it on toast; it was divine on thick farmers yoghurt too.

  1. So many wonderful delights. Wagyu beef pies sound good. Did it taste any different to regular pies Helen?

  7. Great photos Helen! This time it was I that missed out on the markets as I had to work. Hopefully I can make it next time, maybe I will even run into you! Not that I will know when I do : )

But being the citrus freak that I am, I'm so bummed I missed out on the Valencia Oranges! Oh well.. maybe next time.

  8. I've stopped going,really disappointed.
Am i the only one who thinks things should be a little cheaper at markets as they cut out the middle man (retailer).Found my favourite goats cheese but being sold dearer than at the deli,$4.50 for a small tart, even DJ Food Hall is cheaper, one stall advertised one price for their bacon and egg roll and listed the other fillings but charged you extra if you wanted those,no mention on their sign?
Was unimpressed by the wagyu pies,if you want cheap tasty wagyu, try the wagyu burger at Berkelouw Books cafe in Leichhardt.

  9. The cheeses look so good. I wonder how the different coverings affect the flavour.
