Post brekkie $12.90
Two eggs, bacon, sausage, toast and coffee or tea
It's easy to work out how Post Cafe got its name: the white capitals that spell Post Office are still there on this heritage-listed building.

Inside the high ceilings, white walls and polished floorboards make this cafe seem large, spacious and airy. Extra large windows let in plenty of warm sunshine and there's ample walking room between tables. A padded bench provides perfect seating for large tables along one wall; along another are high tables and bar stools perfect for those nursing a coffee over the weekend papers.

Grilled chicken breast $15.90
Served on warm vegetables, kipfler potatoes
and a tarragon demi-glace
There's a lovely relaxed atmosphere here. Families and couples provide a pleasant background buzz, staff are present but not over-bearing, and you really do feel tempted to remain there, whiling away your weekend just soaking up the sun.

Turkish brekkie $12.90
Scrambled eggs with sujuk (spicy Turkish sausage),
potato rosti, blackened tomato salsa and Turkish toast
I've made a couple of visits with different people and the breakfast options (served all day) seem to consistently come up trumps. The Turkish breakfast is a particular specialty: mouthfuls of soft scrambled egg mixed through with hot spicy cubes of sujuk Turkish sausage.
The goats cheese scrambled eggs are also delicous, a muddle of soft-cooked egg the colour of pale butter, piquant with the generous crumblings of goats cheese.
Service can be a tad slow but then we've never really been in a hurry to leave.

Chicken salad $12.90
Rocket, baby spinach, semi-dried tomato,
roasted beetroot and balsamic dressing

Scotch fillet steak $16.90
Served on a bed of buttermilk mash, snow peas,
wilted spinach and red wine jus

Spicy prawn and okra gumbo $12.90
served with steamed rice

Goats cheese scrambled eggs $12.90
with shallots and served on sourdough toast

I used to live near there, but I'd forgotten how good this place is. Thanks AG, I must make a return visit.
ReplyDeleteThose magical words - Breakfast served all day.
ReplyDeleteWho can resist a fry up? Not I.
Looks to be a solid and cheap local. Nice!
ReplyDeleteI went here years ago and it was really nice! That goat's cheese omelette looks DIVINE.
ReplyDeletewow - that's some serious looking breakfast. Great pics too (as usual!)
ReplyDeleteeverything looks soo good! but so far away >_< ill do the trek someday...
ReplyDeletei really wanna try the turkish brekkie, caesar salad and the goats scrambled egg. Sourdough ftw^^!
whoop sorry i meant the chicken salad... Freudian slip maybe?
ReplyDeleteMmm...that Turkish breakfast looks great! I also want to try those gumbos -it's Southern food right? I LOVE Southern food! =)
ReplyDeleteGreat photos by the way!
The steak and mash looks great - but seriously, why bother even put greens on the description if you think three or four pieces is adequate? When I buy a meal, I want a complete meal, not a token green. Bah!

Another good serve of goat's cheese was this morning's special at Sideways Cafe at Dulwich Hill. Scrambled eggs with sundried tomato, goat's cheese and english spinach with grilled roma tomato, crusty toast and a long black. My daughter had a ricotta pancake with rhubarb and yoghurt. My wife had the green eggs -scrambled with pesto, crispy bacon, crusty toast and fresh pineapple juice.
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing better than a good, hearty breakfast! Breakfast (or in uhhh most mornings for me.. Brunch!) is my favourite meals of the day. A good old plate of eggs, meat, vegetables, and bread is always a sight for those sleepy sore eyes! This looks fantastic Helen!
ReplyDeleteHi Trisha - I agree. Brunch means a chance to sleep in! :)
ReplyDeleteI looked at this and thought "as a Marrickville resident" I had to go there and inhale a large cooked brekkie.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, three years looks to have done a lot of damage, eggs looked watery, plates had an unappetising grease-pool under the food, and there seemed to be no care with presentation, ingredients or prices - $4 sides also weren't generous enough to justify the pricing in an area like this.
The goats' cheese stuff still looked like menu highlights, but I'd be heading down to scrambled or baffi & mo instead.
Hi coffeehorse - A shame to hear your experience was less than impressive. We had breakfast here a couple of months ago and found it okay. Have yet to get to Scrambled or Baffi & Mo though - thanks for the tips!
