Hurricane's Grill, Bondi Beach

Ribs. I love ribs. I love people who love ribs.

It's about marinated meat cooked over charcoal. About burnt edges that have caramelised to a delicious sweet crunch. It's about the juiciness of cooking on bone. About scraping off every morsel with the edge of your teeth. About getting your fingers dirty.

Rib lovers understand.

Mediterranean salad $17.00
Mixed fresh leaves, olives, fetta cheese, spanish onion,
cucumber, tomato, capsicum and Mediterranean dressing

And so we've ended up at Hurricane's Grill in Bondi, a huge dining room filled with the smell of charring meat and stooped diners huddled over caramelised carcasses.

Pork ribs full rack with chips $30.00

Whenever I'd spoken with rib lovers in Sydney, Hurricane's Grill had always been spoken of in breathy reverent tones. I had high expections and thankfully, they were fulfilled.

The pork ribs are fantastic. The flesh is tender, fall-off-the-bone and marinated long enough to sustain the tastebuds. I'm pleased, too, that the marinade is without the tomato-ey tang of its American cousin. These taste only of smoky barbecue sauce, and they've been cooked beautifully to a caramelised finish.

The full rack is a feast for a king, and yep, yours truly polished off every single one of them.

Lamb ribs full rack with chips $30.00

The lamb ribs aren't as tender, and the strong smell of lamb is rather all-pervading, but the portion of chips is generous, and a small pot of tomato sauce is provided once we ask.

Our salads (mixed Mediterranean $17 and a mixed fresh garden salad $15) arrive in huge cavernous bowls, both disconcertingly garnished with tufts of alfalfa, about as subtle and attractive as an ill-fitting toupe. The fetta is disappointingly bland and soapy in texture but then again, you don't come to Hurricane's for the salad; you come for the ribs, and those will leave you in definite smiles of carnivorous satiation and finger-licking happiness.

  4. Hi, i love your blog.
Have you tried Kelly's ribs in Westfield Bondi Junction?
I think Kelly's more generous with sauce/marinade and taste rather sweeter than Hurricane's. They're both They're both as yummy tho..:)

  6. Hi Food Hog - We were there on a Tuesday night and it was crazy busy. And the biggest seller was definitely the pork ribs. Obviously with good reason!

Hi Terri - Yup it was an O alright! Hope you get a chance to satiate your rib cravings the next time you're in Sydney.

Hi Uberannie - I was getting hungry again just writing about it and staring at the photos. I think I might need another rib fix soon!

Hi Anon - Thanks, and no I haven't tried Kelly's yet. I'm a little worried about the sweeter aspect - I thought Hurricane's was sweet enough as it is, but will def keep an eye out for it the next time I'm in the area.

Hi Simon - They were great. The foodie grapevine is rarely wrong!

  7. Ribs are the definitive American weekend backyard meat of choice. Fortunately too, we all do not live by the "tomato-ey tang" of barbecue sauce. A ton of apple wood for smoke and just the right amount of cider vinegar and you have a feast worth coming back to.

I salute anyone willing to pick up a bone from either a rack of lamb, beef or pork and devour every last morsel of meat. Depending on your company, of course!

  8. Hi Mike - Steak, lamb chops and sausages are more the order when it comes to Aussie backyard barbies so ribs are always a welcomed treat.

And bone-gnawing is always a guilty pleasure of mine, even in posh restaurants I'll have a discreet little nibble :)

  9. Hi Helen,

If you like Hurricane, you should try Kelly's at the Bondi Junction Westfield. Most of people that I know love Kelly's ribs as well. They have bigger portion too i think, and they serve you with a nice complimentary bread.

  13. Hi Jen S - Ribs are quite easy to cook. I usually baste mine with good ol' char siu sauce but ahhh it's always nice to eat them out, esp with a big plate full of fries :)

  14. Wandering through the Harbourside shopping centre in Darling Harbour earlier this week I noticed that Hurricane's are opening on level 1 there soon (early 2008 according to their web site). Hopefully the quality will not suffer and the location will be more convenient to us inner city dwellers.
