It's Freebie Friday time!
This week's giveaway comes from the kind folk at Signorelli Gastronomia who have provided a $100 dining voucher for one lucky Grab Your Fork reader.
What to choose? Perhaps you'll start with the antipasto platter. Or should you save your stomach for the light-as-air gnocchi? Will there be room for the open lasagna with oxtail? Maybe you'll gather a group of friends and pre-order the suckling pig. Dessert is a given, of course. Where else can you find an affogato with Nocello spheres? And don't forget the pizzas, including the Nutella version that is scooped out of a five kilogram jar. Need a photo reminder? Check out the full post here.

FREEBIE FRIDAY WINNER
Congratulations to HN who has won dinner for two at the WLG Wellington pop-up restaurant in Sydney. H's poem about Wellington was very impressive. Enjoy your evening - you'll have a fantastic night!
My favourite Italian food is gnocchi! What other dish combines the best carb combination of potatoes and flour?
ReplyDeleteMy favourite Italian food is pasta - I especually love Oriechette with sausage and broccoli rabe, yum!
ReplyDeleteMy favourite Italian Food is EVERYTHING Italian... but if I have to pick one it would have to be Tiramisu I can't go to an Italian restaurant without trying it...
ReplyDeleteThere used to be a restaurant in Glebe, called the Mixing Pot. It's where I first tried Italian food and an amazing dessert, Tiramisu. It's also where I discovered that Italian is my favourite cuisine, and while you can have a bad tiramisu, there's always the chance that your next one will be the best ever. So you have to always order it!
ReplyDeleteA luxuriously velvety Parpadelle served with any slow-cooked meat ragu. You just can't go wrong with that combination. :)
ReplyDeleteGnocchi!
ReplyDeleteSuch a simple idea - potato, flour and egg dumplings - but sooo difficult to get right. I love making it - it’s a dish that takes you 2 or 3 times to achieve perfection. And I love ordering it when dining out (even though it’s a bit of a gamble as to what you’ll get on your plate). And the sauce? Two words: Burnt. Butter. But then again, I wouldn’t turn my nose up at a blue cheese sauce. God I’m hungry.
It has to be "cappellacci di zucca" translated as pumpkin ravioli, a pasta typical from my home town Ferrara; you usually eat them with ragu or just sage and butter. It's the first meal I have every time I go back to Ferrara!
ReplyDeletefavourite italian food is definitely Pizza. I love it for it's versatility. It can be made for vegetarians, carnivores and even vegans. What makes it even better is that you can also make dessert pizzas, nutella and banana pizza??? YUMMO
ReplyDeleteTiramisu is the best dessert ever created - coffee, biscuits, cocoa, liqueur, eggs, cheese? Italians certainly have a knack for combining bizarely matched ingredients. Thank you Italians!
ReplyDeleteThe Italian guys who shout "Ciao Andr-aya!" at me every morning make great coffee too.
I love Fiori Di Zucchini done by Mixing Pot in Forest Lodge.
ReplyDeleteForgot to add! I love Fiori Di Zucchini done by Mixing Pot in Forest Lodge - because it's so creamy, crunchy and delicious! Served with the right wine, it's a great way to open the rest of an Italian meal.
ReplyDeleteGnocchi with four cheeses - it's like a party in my mouth and everybody's invited.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely cannelloni. Preferably spinach and ricotta but I love trying new versions at home. Its really versatile and a hit with everyone
ReplyDeleteI like lasagne. Stick anything between sheets of pasta, add some cheese and walla..instant yum!
ReplyDeleteI would have to say that it is il Bollito Misto in it many glorious form. cotechino gives it the backbone of flavor and richness. tongue, shin, ribs, neck, head. True expression of head to tail goodness in the most italian sort of way.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite Italian food would be lasagna. You can do it so many ways and end up with such different tasting dishes, but still know at a glance what it is!
ReplyDeleteMy husband is a tres picky vegetarian who dislikes eating vegetables (yes, such men exist), but he adores my vegetable lasagna and wil eat even his most hated foe eggplant when it's hidden between pasta sheets and Béchamel sauce! Score one for sneaky wives. :)
Lasagna as it evokes a memory that I am very fond of. As a child a family friend, Anna, an older Italian lady, would come to our house and have marathon lasanga making sessions. Since then lasagna has always had a special place for me and nothing compares to the recipie that she handed down to me.
ReplyDeletePizza. It can be anything, with anything, it’s fun to make and fun to eat, and… just, pizza.
ReplyDeleteCannoli.
ReplyDeleteMake the shells yourself so you can add a bit of extra nutmeg and cassia then fill them with anything! I like elderberry and lavender ones with a bit of candied lemon in the casing instead of cinnamon/nutmeg
Mmmm
i love pesto fettucine! nothing beats the awesomeness of fettucine! and pesto is ♥♥♥
ReplyDeleteid lie in a bathtub of pesto fettucine any day xD
I would :
ReplyDeleteCut a thick slice of sourdough bread and toast it
Then i would rub it with raw garlic
Add a few splashes of fruity EVOO
Add fresh basil leaves
...And thick slices of delicious, sweet, vine ripened tomato
Sprinkle with flakes of sea salt
Then I would bite into it
Mmmm....
Why?
Refreshing flavours, varying textures
pizza - classic comfort food; with thin crust fresh tomato paste, stringy mozzarella, olives, cured meats and topped with rocket or maybe basil.
ReplyDeletehad the best pizza in venice. it was an italian restaurant where the locals dine, we found it after getting a recommendation from another place where we had dinner by the grand canal. down many alleyways, almost hidden from the tourists. it was of the thin, soft and flimsy variety, the type you see teenage mutant ninja... turtles eating on tv, the type where you kinda have to fold the slice to prevent the gorgeous toppings from falling out. yummy. i'd fly to venice again just for that.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite Italian dish is the Spaghetti Vongole (Clams Pasta) - the clams are packed with juices when they open, add some garlic, cherry tomatoes, white wine and toss them in some spaghetti (al dente, of course) and don't forget to drizzle some olive oil on top - simple yet satisfying..! Warning: eating this dish may make you want to travel and stay in Italy for some good food experience.
ReplyDelete..Gelato, gelato, gelato!! :D Si, per favore :) And between creamy flavours or fruity.. creamy ALWAYS wins.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite Italian dish is spaghetti alla vongole, or spaghetti with clams in a white wine sauce. Is it food or is it a spiritual encounter with my maker? It's divine. It's my comfort food. Fresh baby clams, I see you and and I thank you. Pasta, I could it eat it all three meals. Chilli pepper and parsley, the colours. Mangia!
ReplyDeleteMy Favourite Italian food is everything of Italian food, pasta, pizza, slow cooked ragu. A good hearty Spaghetti Bolognese is the way to warm up your stomach.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard enough to decide what to eat at an Italian restaurant, but deciding my ultimate favourite Italian dish...? It's a tough one!
ReplyDeleteI will skip some of the favourites for most people (e.g tiramisu, pasta..) and choose the Deep Fried Sardines as ONE of my favourite Italian dishes. These little fish are so delicate, yet when you bite into the crispy skin, you get the taste of the sea - salty & crunchy, with a squeeze of lemon, mmmmm! Bring some my way!
My favourite is Tiramasu served with small scoops of cofee gelato and lemon gelato......
ReplyDeletedelight to the palate and so indulgent !!!!
At first I thought it had to be pasta of some kind, but which one? And then I thought of my first hot chewy Margherita pizza square on a burning Roma footpath, or the first time I tried sarde e sour (sardines in onion and vinegar) or the first time I had tomatoes hot from the sun on bruschetta. Or was it when I tried saltimbocca with salty buttery goodness running down my chin. My list grew and grew until I realised my favourite Italian dish appears to be the first time I try anything new.
ReplyDeleteprobably the classic Margherita pizza, simple, delicious and tastes like hot cheesy sunshine!
ReplyDeleteTrenette al pesto. A traditional Genovese/Ligurian dish. I love all Italian food, but i am particularly fond of this regional dish because it brings back memories of my time in Italy - living la vita bella as a student on exchange. This dish is a reminder of home and of travel/life experiences.
ReplyDeleteI love "Pappardelle con Ragù di anatra" (Pappardelle with duck ragù). The pasta has to be fresh and the dish served with a light Montepulciano d'Abruzzo :)
ReplyDeleteIt reminds me of summer vacations spent in Toscany.
Capellini allo scoglio is my all time favourite Italian dish with prawns, , eggplant and scallions in a cognac sauce - it's bold, spicy and overwhelming - much like the Italian men!
ReplyDeletewarm, fresh, crusty bread, diced tomatos, basil, garlic, a drizzle of olive oil and a generoius sprinkle of sea salt...the most simple and delicious italian food of all time is BRUSCHETTA!! the tomato and salt combination is absolute genius - it is the only food I've found that I cannot get sick of...no matter how much I eat (which is A LOT!!!)
ReplyDeleteLove the homemade and a-bit-resistant soft gnocchi. Gnocchi is the second Italian food after spaghetti bolognaise and afterward, I love all other Italian food (as long as it is not spaghetti bolognaise)....
ReplyDeleteravioli- because its a italian equivalent of dumplings and i love dumplings! (obviously im asian :p)
ReplyDeleteNothing beats a plate of soft, buttery homemade gnocchi with a glass of tangy red over a candlelit table. This would swiftly be followed by a rich plate of tiramisu and some sweet kisses! Heaven!
ReplyDeleteMy favourite Italian dish would have to be tiramisu. A good tiramisu is the perfect comfort food - and it also happens to be one of the desserts that I am too afraid to make because I secretly don't want to know exactly how much cream, mascarpone and sugar goes into it... :p
ReplyDeleteItalian, so many favorites, I love a starter with prosciutto in it. Either on a piece of crusty bread covered in garlic butter and semi-dried tomatoes or wrapped around an asparagus coated in balsamic.
ReplyDeleteFor the main course something pasta, like Lasagna, Ravioli or Spaghetti, a hard choice always at restaurants.
After an always satisfying meal, Gelato for dessert, to help cleans the palette and help detox the red you had with dinner.
I LOVE all Italian food as I'm Italian myself. My favourite would have to be Gnocchi and Italian tomato sauce because my mum makes the best Gnocchi and Italian tomato sauce.
ReplyDeleteMy tried a really nice pizza once from the "Sicilian" in Parramatta !!! The food was absolutely delicious.. especially the Pizza ! Yes, who can resist the cheesy crusted pizza. hmmms
ReplyDeletePizzaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
ReplyDeleteA-Rome-a therapy,
De-lira-eous flavour,
Yes this food,
Should be savoured!
Boccelli in adelaide :) Large pasta portions that are like real Italian home sized!! They are delicious and you leave fulllllly satisfied!
ReplyDeleteThere's desserts that remind you of Italy (even if I have never been there) but I can pretend ;)
Best thing ever was the Chocolate Noir Gelato (extra dark chocolate) we had in Florence. Best pasta we had was a rabbit ravioli, very rustic and the sauce wasn't too strong.
ReplyDeleteCafe Belgiorno's Calzones at Mount Gambier are massive and so worthit. Loveeeee a turnover pizza filled with melted cheese and tomato. Perfect Italian dish with original Italian ingredients
ReplyDeletemy favourite would be spaghetti bolognaise because its meaty and full of flavour and best of all, once its finished, I mop up the sauce with some bread :)
ReplyDeleteIt's gotta be Nutella - tall (in its jar!), dark, handsome, and oozing sex appeal, just like the perfect Italian man...
ReplyDeleteThe ultimate sanwich;
ReplyDeleteWood fired ciabatta bread cut in half, topped with freshly shaved slices of proscuitto de san danielle, new season vine ripened roma tomatoes drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and seasalt, buffalo milk mozzarella.. this sandwich pays homage to all of the best italian ingredients... simple and yet so satisfyingly good
mancini's 3 cheese gnocchi is the best! nomnom! i did work placement at mancini's last yr so i could look at the mass of italian foods being made each day!
ReplyDeleteTiramisu.. Cause coffee needs to be in everything, particularly desserts :)
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone for your entries. Congratulations to the winner, announced here.
