Lord Wolseley Hotel, Ultimo

In the back streets of Pyrmont, you'll find the narrowest pub in New South Wales, the Lord Wolseley Hotel. Built in 1881, the pub still remains much of a local secret, the front bar scattered with mostly male patrons, quietly downing ice cold schooners.

The bistro at the rear of the pub is bright and modern, with a small dining room situated on a mezzanine level, above the bistro counter. There's no table service here, but the buzzer system works efficiently here.

The menu is surprisingly extensive, split between traditional Aussie pub grub and Thai dishes. Portions are ridiculously generous and the prices will leave you plenty of change for another beer.

Cheese burger $8.95

The cheese burger is a mountainous stack of beef patty, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion and melted cheese, served with a tidal wave of chips on the side.

Cheese burger with the lot $9.95

Add a dollar, and you'll receive beetroot, pineapple and a fried egg on your cheese burger, and still have change from a tenner. I had the cheese burger with the lot and struggled, but happily so.

Garlic bread $3

Garlic bread arrives as triangles of Turkish bread soaked with garlic butter.

Caesar salad with chicken $9.95

Caesar salad with chicken makes up in quantity for what it lacks in finesse. The chicken is a little dry, but the bacon is super crisp, and the lettuce may not be the traditional cos but it's fresh and crisp.

Lord steak sandwich $9.95

The Lord steak sandwich combines rump steak, tomato, onion and a fried egg sunny side up. Given the usual chewy meat you find in steak sandwiches, this one is surprisingly tender.

Mixed grill $12.95

And can you get more Aussie than a mixed grill? A carnivore's delight awaits with a hearty platter of rump steak, sausage, grilled tomato and bacon served with chips and salad. The steak is a little gristly, but this isn't a gentleman's meal. This will put hair on your chest or otherwise feed a family of four.

  2. All that food looks fabulous! I'm impressed with the cheeseburger, coming with the salad too - normally it's just a pattie and a slice of cheese. Oh and one of my favourite foods is grilled tomatoes - I put them in the oven with some mixed herbs and let it cook down until it's squashable, then I squash it over toast - YUM!

  20. Looks like some great value to be had all round. For the city area, I would have expected higher prices.
