Sea Bay Hand Made Noodle Restaurant, Burwood
Fried handmade noodles with beef $9.80
I've yet to make it to the City branch of Sea Bay, but here we are at its Burwood branch for a night of handmade noodles and plenty of lamb.
The inside of the restaurant is plain and simple, unadorned but for a few traditional tapestry scenes. It fills up quickly though, and we marvel at the enormous quantities that seem to pile on everyone's tables. The portion sizes are enormous and yet everyone still seems to be over-ordering.
Deep-fried tofu with vegetables
Our fried handmade noodles are fresh and slippery, doused in a spicy sweet sauce and toosed through with cumin-spiced beef, bits of shallot and jewels of red capsicum.
The deep-fried tofu with vegetables is also a hit. Golden pillows of tofu are soft and silky at its core. The accompanying mix of green vegetables, red capsicum and tomato have a contrasting crunch.
Lamb ribs in hot pot
When our lamb rib hot pot arrives, the smell of mutton is unmistakable. A huge cavernous vessel holds clear vermicelli noodles, shiitaki mushrooms, slices of cucumber and shallots in an aromatic clear broth. The smell is almost overwhelming and the broth is rich in flavour and intensity, leaving a residual film of fattiness on the tongue.
Pork meat pastries $7.80
Our pork meat pastries arrive last to the table. Unlike other pork pies I've tried, the meat in these is surprisingly wet and juicy, making their transfer to mouth somewhat difficult. Even more striking is the explosion of cumin with every mouthful. It's a bit like being punched in the face with cumin, I laugh to Veruca.
We step outside feeling extremely full and somewhat drowsy. There's a crowd of diners waiting outside. No other restaurant on this part of Burwood Road has such a gathering.
I'm breathing shallowly, still bathed in the lingering smell of cumin and mutton. It seems we've eaten enough to last us through a Mongolian winter, except we're in Sydney and it feels a lot more like summer.

ReplyDeleteOh, and I wanted to give you a tip - Pastizzi Cafe in Newtown. Delicious, great atmosphere and service, and the canoli are great too. I went on Saturday and went back two more times this weekend, couldn't resist!

ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip on Pastizzi Cafe. I read about their move from Surry Hills to Newtown in last week's Good Living. I love their pastizzi and I remember their freshly filled cannolis with particular fondness :)
I would encourage those that visit the City branch to try the pumpkin dumplings and the egg plant in special sauce Yum!
ReplyDeleteHi Anon - I had some pumpkin dumpings at Green Gourmet in Chatswood recently. They were super yum. We had chilli eggplant too. I'll have to try both versions at Sea Bay too
ReplyDeleteHandmade noodles are my favourite. .and of course. the tofu.. i would die for.. :) good tofu are a hard thing to find here. :(
