Yellow Bistro & Food Store, Potts Point



Brunch at Yellow.

Mention Yellow, and most sweet tooths immediately think of Lorraine Godsmark, Rockpool alumnus and part of date tart legend.

I arrive early for brunch but don't complain. There's plenty of eye candy in the adjoining Food Store. I lust quietly over the tins of Ortiz sardines, the fridge full of cheeses and a glass display cabinet flaunting luscious cakes, pastries and handmade marshmallows.


Croque madame $15.00
Pan-fried batard with poached eggs, Heidi gruyere, leg ham, rocket and chilli jam

The croque madame is a celebration of protein across all our favourite animals. Leg ham, poached eggs and melty gruyere cheese are protected by two thick slabs of golden pan-fried crusty batard. It's the addition of egg that turns a croque monsieur into a croque madame. It's the garnish of rocket and splodge of chilli jam that turn this rich heavy sandwich into a rich well-rounded meal.


Toast with jam $5.50

Toast with jam seems like a light and easy option, but even this is deceptively filling. Brushed generously with butter and grilled both sides, I'm sure I detect a faintness of cheese, its slight saltiness actually working quite well with the jam.

So yes, I'd ordered the toast but only because I'd planned to follow it with dessert. A sweet tooth always thinks ahead.

Strawberry and rhubarb frangipane tart $6.50/$8.00


Pecan and raspberry cake $7.50/$9.00

Choosing a dessert is an excruciating decision, but in the end I settle on the lemon tart. We're both so full that we get all our desserts takeaway, packed in little white boxes. I eat my lemon tart later that night, the puff pastry is a little soft by then, but the lemon curd is tangy and buttery, airy with bubbles and still somewhat runny.

And yes that was a microphone in the first photo. My first radio interview in a cafe. The final program (a series of conversations about food) will air on Radio National early next year.

  8. Doesn't this place have the most ridiculous weekend surcharge? From memory, a friend and I breakfasted here on a Sunday and were charged over 10% as a weekend surcharge. We vowed never to go back, even though the food was great.

  9. Now I crave a Croque Madame :) I had one of Lorraine G's Croque Monsieurs with chilli jam when she was at Six Seven Ate, but that was eons ago, so perhaps its time for a revisiting of sorts.....hmmmm....

    Hi Anon - Shallow dof tends to be the current trend in food photography, but I also tend to use it as many restaurants I visit have low light and I very rarely use a flash.

    Hi Reemski - They do have weekend surcharges but I suppose they are paying penalty rates to their staff... a tough call but let's hope they renumerate their staff well!

  14. as its literally almost down the road i walked past to check it out recently. isnt it supposed to close down soon? well anyway, i went in and ive to say i expected a bit more... nothing amazing there nd i rather went to bill's instead. which i loved!!! and will blog about later. ;)
    do you see a pattern? im on a visit and read up on places on your lovely blog and then go check them out myself. :P so thanks for the tips! im looking at so many shops and places im waaay behind on posting about them... so much food and so little time!
