with wagyu.
Ahhh.... now I have your attention.
All-you-can-eat BBQ $29.90
With a protein free-for-all on offer, Kaizen draws us in like moths to a flame. The boys have been looking forward to this all day. I guess it's the same type of excitement sweet tooths get before a high tea buffet.
The decor is modern and uncluttered, an emphasis on clean lines with plenty of timber in the form of tables, chairs and as hanging cubes overhead. Splashes of colour come from painted round-edged rectangles afixed to the wood above our heads.

The all-you-can-eat yakiniku-style barbecue allows you to choose from a list of dishes nominated from their a la carte menu. We're allowed unlimited ordering from the following barbecue list:

Our waitress takes our first round of orders and whilst we wait, we nibble on panchan, the complimentary side dishes that are quickly delivered to our table.

Miso soup
Covered bowls of miso soup are generous with squares of seaweed but before we have time to slurp even a spoonful, the onslaught of meat arrives. MEAT.

Meat on the grill
It's a veritable meat-fest as we sear, flip and sear again a non-stop carousel of iron. There's always a slow wait at the start as the barbeuce grill gets going but soon there's an overflow of cooked meat that gets tranferred to an overflow plate which never seems to empty.
We find it hard to not overcook the scotch fillet steak in amongst everything else. The marinated beef rib is by far the favourite dish. It's a bit like unwrapping a present when we unwind the long strip of meat from around the bone. Once seared, it's sliced into more manageable piees using the pair of scissors provided, meat that is soft and tender. No wonder this dish is restricted to two orders per person.
I also quite like the pork belly too. It's best left on the grill for as long as possible, until the thick ribbons of fat render to a crisp and the edges caramelise to a tacky sweetness.
Lemon salt with black sesame seeds and dipping sauces
The meats are refreshed and seasoned in our personal compartmentalised platters. There are two types of soy dressing and a square holding a sprinkle of salt and black sesame seeds with a fresh wedge of lemon.
Korean spoon and metal chopsticks
We eat using the traditional Korean metal chopsticks, cool rounded utensils which always strike me as being slippery and almost clinical. They do add a sense of surgical precision when eating, especially with their extremely narrow tapered ends. The floral panel at the top of the chopsticks are a pretty decorative touch.
Green tea
It's a bit of a meat overload for me, although the boys aren't complaining. The panchan offer little in the way of vegetables and although these can be replenished, it's a struggle to attract the attention of waitstaff and times.

I walk past here almost every day and I've never noticed the wagyu on the chalkboard... I need to get my eyes checked :P Time to get my work buddies together and go silly on the wagyu
ReplyDeleteHoly cow that is a lot of meat. I'm so glad you reviewed this place because I always go past and wonder what it's like! Sounds like pretty good value if it comes with waygu. The boyfriend will love this, he doesn't consider a meal a proper meal unless it is completely meat-laden :)

ReplyDeleteWow, that sounds like great value. We had Korean BBQ last night and it was quite expensive for the amount of meat we got (not that it wasn't great). Wagyu ... SECONDARY CUTS of wagyu too, the tastiest bits ... I'm drooling.
ReplyDeleteAs an aside that photo with the "thongs" is interesting. Because of the way you've framed it, it's hard to establish perspective. I can't help seeing it now as steps leading into an Asian house with slippers neatly arranged outside - only suspended one above the other in mid air ... ?

Mmmm I find that it is usually the marinated beef ribs/LA ribs that shine the most at Korean bbq and this one I must def try! Reasonably price and looks great ^^! Thx!

Hi noodleboy - I do find that the different grades of wagyu meant you often get what you pay for! For $29 we couldn't complain as the meat was endless.
The problem with a 50mm fixed lens is the limitations of framing! I like your idea though...

Hi D - No time limit but you may want to ring them to check. We were done in about 90 min though. And barely able to move!

Hi Simon - No particular low-light although I did mention we didn't really cook the eye fillet steak with the finesse it deserved. I'm fine cooking steaks on the stove but bbq grills always seem harder to manage. Plus we were always distracted cooking and eating other things.

I went to Choga (which is in Prince Centre on Quay St) yesterday, which apaprently USED to be unlimited buffet ..but isn't anymore
and that's $22 per head!

ReplyDeleteYEAH someone reviewed this place!! Ive seen its all you can eat but it seemed a bit empty. I always love asian potato salad, well i just like potato salad!! But i cant stand metal chopsticks, it feels like its a surgical instrument and also i hate it if the metal hits your teeth, i just hate that feeling and taste!!

Hi sydneyguyrojoe - Ahh yes I know exactly what you mean about using metal chopsticks. It does make my spine tingle when you clang them on your teeth, and I tend to feel all fingers and thumbs because they're so narrow and slippery :)

ReplyDeleteUsed to frequent here A LOT as the food was amazing. The Wagyu beef and sweet dipping sauce along with lemon and salt & pepper!
ReplyDeleteHowever, I called recently to make a booking for the BBQ and they said they no longer do the BBQ. They said something about safety reasons or something similar. Anyway, they no longer do the 'All you can eat' so don't go there expecting a feast.
Sad really
Ate here yesterday, really disappointed. All-you-can-eat bbq was $35pp with one drink of your choice (one only, no refills), a refillable salad bowl, NO WAYGU beef what so ever AND none of the meats were marinated.
ReplyDeleteThe seafood (two pieces of octopus, two pieces of prawn and three pieces of muscles) were all still defrosting so it took awhile for it to cook and it wasn't tasty at all.
We were given soy sauce for dipping and when we asked if they had anything else, we were given teriyaki sauce.
Our bbq was done on a hot plate over a butane gas stove not a grill (as pictured).
Paying for our meals was cash only so my boyfriend had to run off to the ATM machine.
Not a satisfying/memorable experience for us, definitely won't be going back.
