So you've read about Foodies' Guide. Now who wants a free copy to aid their next food adventure?
It's a long weekend for Sydneysiders and what better way to start it than with a Freebie Saturday giveaway.
THE PRIZE:
Five readers will win a copy of the The 2011 Foodies' Guide to Sydney authored by Simon Thomsen and written by a team of 18 food writers, including me.
We've combed the streets of Sydney and beyond for this fifth edition, hunting down the best bakeries, cheese specialists, chocolate makers, patissiers and more. You'll find snapshot reviews of butchers, delis, fishmongers, spice shops and greengrocers, all helpfully indexed by suburb, and clearly marked on detailed maps for easy reference and navigation.
Most are small-time producers specialising in something amazing, heartfelt and overwhelmingly delicious. Each snappy profile aims to provide not only the store highlights, but a little background information on the owners behind them, so that you, too, will feel like you know them before you've even set foot through the door.
The 2011 Foodies' Guide to Sydney retails for $29.95 (Hardie Grant and SBS). An iPhone app will be available from 18 October 2010.

my current fav foodie place is Meet Fresh Taiwanese dessert house. Absolutely love it, i have been having their desserts for lunch..
ReplyDeleteMy favorite place is still Yellow in Potts Point. You can find my full review of it on virtualtourist. New Yorker, but can provide a Sydney address. Back here often.
ReplyDeleteEveleigh Markets - great stop for fantastic coffee, wonderful aromas, breakfast, and so many great stalls!
ReplyDeleteLebanese manoosh from Enmore (Zaatar and lubneh is the bomb!)
ReplyDeletehttp://www.manoosh.com.au/
Gosh! There are just so many to choose from.. eek!
ReplyDeleteOn a long weekend like this it would have to be Bourke Street Bakery for some of their delectable goodies :)
Toan Thang at Flemington is my mosted loved pho place. I crave it on a near daily basis and find myself often going there on a lazy Sunday for a big nice bowl of pho and red bean shaved ice. Their soup base is amazing and the beef slices are fresh and of good quality.
ReplyDeleteAbla Patisserie in Dulwich Hill. There's nothing better than a Sunday afternoon with good strong coffee and some Lebanese treats.
ReplyDeleteMarkets, markets, markets. My pick for a quick no fuss stop are the markets at Warrick Farm. One millions tomatoes, 33 thousand types of lettuce and grab some flowers on the way out for mum.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite foodie place for shopping is Maroubra Junction. A hidden gem I discovered 12 months ago. One of the best fish and seafood shops, a great deli, several terrific asian food stores and a fabulous fruit and veg shop. And to my delight when I consulted my 2010 foodies' guide found they were all listed. Now, if someone could open a cafe with good coffee and good food, my life would be bliss. There is a cafe, Verge, past the library that does great coffee but the menu is predictable. Please guys, rethink your menu? Do you really need to list 10 different versions of scrambled eggs!
ReplyDeleteSweet Belem @ 35C New Canterbury Road, Petersham for the best Portuguese Tarts in Australia! So good I went from the city & back via public transport to grab some tarts before heading back to Brisbane.
ReplyDeleteSydney is so multicultural, you can go to Cabramatta for some Vietnamese, head to Punchbowl for some Lebanese, Marrickville for Greek, Newtown for Thai and my favourite, Auburn for some Turkish goodness. Mado cafe makes some yummy and addictive stretchy icecream, it has to be my favourite foodie place to be on a weekend, doing some people watching while sipping away my coffee...
ReplyDeleteSo many foodie choices in Sydney,
ReplyDeleteY is it hard to choose a favourite?
Dessert is a meal that is hard to miss,
Never will I skip
Eating Ricotta Cakes from Papa at Haberfield
Y, tell me y are they so addictive?
im a usyd student and nothing is better than good and cheap food
ReplyDeletebobby's cafe on abercrombie st in darlington is awesome. its cheap and the bobby's burger, made to order, is orgasmic. what more can you ask for?
best combo? white hot chocolate (served with a tiny teddy) and a bobby's burger. yay!
My favourite spot is the Marrickville markets on a Sunday morning. The produce is so fresh and it's great to buy directly from the growers.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite stop is Chinatown, Haymarket. It is close to my place and there will be some new food stall, restaurants or dessert places popping up non-stop. The places where I used to eat will somehow replaced by a new eateries, but I can always choose whether I want to try new place or wander around for my favourite p...laces. Afterward, I can still wander around again for dessert after meals. These places also are cheaps and not hitting me hard on the bills after I'm full.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favourites is Mamak - I've lost count of the number of times I've been there, but the good food, good prices and good times I've had with my friends means it's always a great place to catch up over lunch =D
ReplyDelete..but on the downside, I now suffer cravings for roti tisu and teh tarik.
My favourite foodie place is Yume Sushi in Drummoyne. I walk past it on the way home and pick up takeaway or sushi often.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite little foodie stop at the moment is the Artarmon train station. From the outside, this little area seems like an unlikely choice, but here I can pick up nearly any Japanese dry or frozen ingredient from one of two Japanese grocery stores on the pretty brick-paved Wilkes Ave, and then pop next door to the discreet En ceramics shop to drool over Japanese ceramics. And of course get some of Sydney's best sushi at Sushi-ya.
ReplyDeleteAnd just a couple of steps away opposite the train station on Harden St is the excellent Artarmon Family Butcher with a great range of organic meat and small goods. The fruit and vegetable store has a super-fresh range, and the vegie store, as well as the two mini-marts have excellent cold sections with a range of gourmet dips, yoghurts, cheeses and goodies that you would expect in an upmarket deli.(and if you're not in a rush, there is a great little St Vinnie's too). Artarmon is my new Sydney secret!
I have to say I love Wasavie especially their soft-shell crab and buta no kakuni. The crab is so crunchy yet so soft inside. The pork is so succulent, quite fatty, but hey a foodie can splurge once in a while. That completed with black sesame ice cream is a little piece of heaven.
ReplyDelete(C)ould the long drive this weekend be worth it?
ReplyDelete(A)ll of 50 mins is so long to sit!
(B)ut Sydney's New Asia is worth a shot,
(R)ustic treats from the old world,
(A)mazing glitzy junk food twisted and twirled,
(M)any different fresh fruit and vegs abundant,
(A)lmost thought some of that stuff was redundant,
(T)astebuds are bursting,
(T)ongue is thirsting
(A)ll the way to CABRAMATTA!
Kimama Kitchen in Eating World at Chinatown. Its a bit of a guilty pleasure/hiddem gem. For only $8 you get this amazingly full bowl of rice, with crispy karaage chicken with heaps of sauce! plus you get free refills of miso soup :) whats not to love?!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I have travelled all over Sydney and NSW to find the best sourdough, and there is one place that beats them all - Bourke St Bakery! If only they had one with olives and feta!
ReplyDeletei didnt try many foods in sydney due to the price and im always alone in dining, hence cant order a lot of variety.. i love japanese food and i love one of the restaurant in chinatown by the name of 'Kura', their katsu don is superbly delicious and the rice that comes with it that makes the dish 'oishi'
ReplyDeleteCurrently my favourite foodie stop in sydney is malay-chinese takeaway..i heard that it has the best laksa from my sister and from lots of food blog..but the first dish i tried is their combination kuey tiow..it doesn't taste nice for me..so i think maybe it just a normal shop..i knew i was wrong when i tried their laksa the second time i went there..their laksa is comparable or event better than the laksa from Malaysia, which is the country i had live for 20 years !!
ReplyDeleteVictor Churchill butcher on Queen St in Woollahra.
ReplyDeleteLike... an abstract modernist meat art gallery.
I get so excited when I'm off to shop at Marrickville Smokehouse. Always an enthusiastic welcome and the cheeky but charming Richard is always full of recommendations and advise and is incredibly passionate about his fabulous products, including amazing hams, proscuitto, sausages, bacon and the most succulent steaks an...d enormous rib roasts. Fred Flinstone would be in Heaven with these but only if he gets in before me and I'd like to see him try!!! Yabba Dabba Doooooooo
ReplyDeleteThere's no point denying it, I must confess....... I am addicted to Misschu's Traditional Peking Duck Pancakes AND to make matters worse if you're too lazy to leave home to pick them up "You ling, I bling" on their electric bikes!!!! It's just too easy. Shhhh don't tell anyone
ReplyDeletewell, i don't yet have a fave place because i'm not moving to sydney for another week (tho have an oz address ready for shipping!). i need the book to get me started!!
ReplyDeleteDrag yourself outta bed early on a Saturday morning or you're likely to miss out on the incredible Almond Croissants made in house at Fratelli Paradiso Potts Point. Absolute bliss enjoyed with their consistently great coffee and watch the pizza dough being prepared for lunch. What more could you possibly need?
ReplyDeleteFor a post swim feast at Bondi you can't go past a proscuitto, rocket and mozzarella piadina from La Piadina. Piadina is a Northern Italian flatbread. Yummo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI love Sweetness The Patisserie in Epping for their incredibly soft, delicately flavoured marshmallows. It's like eating fruit in the manifestation of a cloud. Oh and the fact that this amazing foodie haunt is hiding out in humble Epping, like it's taking a vacation from the usual food suburbs of Sydney!
ReplyDeleteMy favourite Sydney haunt is Nut Roaster at Lakemba. In one stop I can buy all the ingredients for my own mixed nut speiciality, muesli ingredients, loads of lebanese delights, cheese, olives, breads etc it is pure heaven. I never get out of there with out spening $100 or more!!
ReplyDeleteNoodlehead
Sydney has so many sushi spots to choose from but I have been visiting one place for nearly 8 years now. Makoto in Liverpool St is my happy place and has been since I was cutting class in high school, hungry during uni lectures and now I often drive by after work. You cant go past their super fresh sushi and my favorite terriyaki chicken handrolls!
ReplyDeleteIf you are a tourist in Sydney,
ReplyDeleteHeading to Fish Market will make you bouncy.
So many fresh seafood to choose from,
Oysters and sashimis are the bomb.
Looking at people shucking oysters,
You only have to worry about feathers:
As a reminder for those sitting outside,
You must share food with seagulls by the seaside.
This famous foodie stop needs no introduction. People would drive a fair way to munch on their crusty bread - the Hong Ha Mascot's pork roll!
ReplyDeleteWe always try to make a stop when picking up relatives from the airport and everyone loves it!
Just the simple combination of pork, corriander, onions, spring onion, carrots and cucumber (don't forget the hot chilli) makes me drool.
I recently tried their meatball roll and it's also worth driving all the way there for a cheap & quick meal. YUM!
my brekki in maroubra this morning at the Lite Hearted Cafe was definitely a winner...although I should have asked for a small version of the 'big brekki', seeing as i only managed to eat half of it...hmmm maybe not such a 'lite' meal afterall, but definitely yummy!
ReplyDeleteOne of my favourite spot to enjoy sushi would be Kansai in Hunter Connection. To say the truth, I am still new in Sydney and I do not know a lot of good places. That is why this food guide would definitely serve me well!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely the coffee and brekkie baked eggs at Clover in Annandale. Delicious, great service and quirky.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite foodie place in Sydney should be called "Got no idea" as we don't live there but go to Sydney often and we just go into any place that looks interesting and smells great then if it's to our liking we add it to our list of foodie places. There's just sooo many places to go too so we never end up going back to the same place as we are not familiar with Sydney and just want to try everywhere and everything and LOVE IT! We have the best food experiences in Sydney and a book to show us where to go would be even more exciting in our gastronomical adventures! I'll be downloading the app for sure on my iphone. So grab your fork!
ReplyDeleteCan't go past the Portuguese chicken from Petersham Charcoal Chicken, amazing chooks cooked over the coals with beautiful piri-piri sauce and a good chili kick (then a stop off at Coffee Alchemy in Marrickville for the best coffee in Sydney)
ReplyDeleteI may get shot down for this, but in Bondi there is a fish and chip shop on the promenade which sells deep fried mars bars. The batter is sweet and coconutie and when fried (in a separate vat- not the fish & chip one) the batter becomes so crispy and the mars bar liquifies and oozes out. I take all our visiting tourist friends there after the walk from bronte (or coogee) to bondi - we deserve it by then, and the deliciousness tops off the brilliant views!!
ReplyDeleteAmazingly fresh sashimi from De Costi at the Seafood Markets. Just add wasabi, soy sauce and chopsticks. Fast food at it's best!!! Incredible flavour and value and variety but my personal faves are kingfish and salmon. Also the staff are so friendly and knowledgable -perfect combo
ReplyDeleteRight in the heart of Haberfield,
ReplyDeleteThis little treasure should be revealed,
Sweet sweet desserts only in my mind,
Ricotta cakes at Pasticceria Papa are divine!
My favourite is the Sydney Markets because all the food there is just so fresh it's delicious!
ReplyDeleteMy favourite foodie stop at the moment is Meet Fresh. I think its only been open for less than a month but when I'm in the city or find myself in the city and craving an after dinner snack this place instantly pops to mind :) I've only been there 2 or 3 times at night cos the huge queues are such a pain. But then sometimes during daytime I find myself there cos there is virtually no queue haha~
ReplyDeleteI know it's nothing new.. but I love to pop in to Longrain for a chili and coconut martini and to share a dessert platter.
ReplyDeleteAMAZEMENT!
Definitely one of my top guilty pleasures.
Belle Fleur at Rozelle for to die for belgian chocolates!
ReplyDeleteLa Banette Patisserie at Glebe Point Road! The pastries are decent, the desserts are delectable, this little cozy patisserie has truly amazed me. I'm blown away by the exquisite flavour of the strawberry croissant I had it this morning. If you ask for a word to describe the experience - DELIGHTFUL!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite foodie stop is in Newtown. BLOODWOOD is a bloody good restaurant with creative industrial decor, friendly staff, great coffee, and a menu with the freshest ingredients! I can seriously sit there and try everything on the menu in one setting! Bloody oath! =)
