James Squire Brewhouse, King St Wharf

I'm not a huge beer drinker, but having recently been enlightened on the joys of real ale, James Squire is usually my pick of the bar.

The James Squire Brewhouse down at trendy King Street Wharf offers an extensive range of ales along with a modern Australia, steak and seafood menu.

After our bargain $5 steak dinner earlier, we couldn't resist dessert. I shared a frozen chocolate mousse cake with cream and coupled it with a pint of James Squire Porter.

Frozen chocolate mousse cake with King Island double cream $10.50

The chocolate mousse was dense, chocolately and rich--especially combined with the lake of chocolate sauce and the dollop of artery-clogging King Island double cream. This is heaven for chocolate lovers but a little light on finesse.

The James Squire Porter was dark and flavoursome but relatively light and creamy. Made of roasted barley and wheat, its suggested pairing is chocolate mud cake or steak and Yorkshire pud. This definitely went down a lot easier than the mousse!

There are a couple of other desserts on the menu too which caught my eye. Next time I would definitely consider the lemon and lime panacotta and the banoffee pie. Why is banoffee pie so hard to find in Sydney?

The Brewhouse has a cosy atmosphere of blokedom combined with enough light and polished floorboards to appease the girls. The attention to catering to both sexes is evidenced by the ditties alongside the entrances to both bathrooms.

Comfy Chesterfield lounges, dark wood chairs and tables, and plenty of wooden benches outside to relax on balmy summer evenings.

Australia. The lucky country.
