A question regarding the bullet train and making bookings. I'm underway in planning a trip myself.

I gather you used a JR pass to get around? Purchasing a JR pass here is essentially a redemption voucher for a ticket when you arrive.

Is it possible to make a booking with just the redemption voucher or is a ticket required ?

Ideally I'd like to book early to save some of the hassle. Especially as kids will be coming along.

    Thanks muchly.

Hi Andrew - Yes we used JR passes which were validated at JR offices and then converted to a pretty JR pass. I presume you will not be able to make a booking until you have this pass, as your passport is checked and recorded during the validation process.

Once you have your pass, you simply present it at the JR booking windows to get tickets for reserved seats. We never had a problem getting seats.

    Enjoy Japan!
