Mountbatten Hotel, Haymarket

We had lunch at the Mountbatten Hotel, our local watering hole which offers above-average pub grub, a buzzy modern atmosphere and is rarely smokey. The food on various occasions has been outstanding value -- their fish and chips are a particular stand-out memory; the fish was sweet and flaky, the batter was light and fluffy and the tartare sauce had a great zing to it.

On Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the Mountbatten offers special $7 meals (in conjunction with a drink purchase), although the offerings have recently been revised (ie. reduced). Mondays and Wednesdays are now King Island rump steak with mash; Tuesdays are fish and chips, or chicken schnitzel.

King Island rump chargrilled with mashed potato or chips and red wine jus $7.00 with drink purchase on Mondays and Wednesdays

Disappointingly our steaks were very average, which was a surprise given the high level of quality we've experienced otherwise to-date. We ordered medium rare steaks, but one came back medium and one came back well-done. Both were fairly chewy affairs. We also felt the mash could have done with a bit more butter.

Maybe this is the peril of ordering a $7 steak. Friends went back another day and had the regular-priced $14.50 King Island sirloin which was, by all accounts, magnificent. We can also vouch for their calamari rings which are always tender and tasty.

Next time I'm going on a Tuesday for the fish and chips.
