Weekday Picnic, David Jones Food Hall

picnic

Lunch with the girls suddenly turns into a weekday CBD picnic. After a flurry of mid-morning emails debating the ideal lunch spot, we end up doing a quick whip-around the David Jones Food Hall instead.

We collect a series of smallgoods, a wedge of blue cheese and a crusty Laurent baguette big enough for three. The friendly woman behind the counter happily obliges my request to cut this into thirds, and we re-emerge back into the fluorescent-lit foodcourt laden with paper packages and happy grins.

Whilst the lunchtime crowds around us chomp on limp burgers, greasy kebabs, shiny fried noodles and over-priced sandwiches, we hastily unwrap our parcels with the delicious anticipation of Christmas. Or fare is spread out into a tabletop picnic. We rub our hands with glee before diving right in.

Our crusty baguette--all fluffy inside, is the carrier for shavings of coppa with chilli, slices of olive mortadella, discs of chilli salami and soft smoky mouthfuls of marinated eggplant. Although we had loitered over the displays of cakes and pastries, and the rows of exquisite handmade chocolates, dessert is a cheese course: a final bit of bread topped with a creamy slather of Shadows of Blue from Tarago River.

We eat. We chat. We wish we didn't have to head back to work.

Mmmm looks yummy. I'm feeling hungry again. Note to self - never read Helen's blog late at night as it induces hunger pangs which causes me to eat and get fat.

I don't know how you managed to resist all the delicious cakes in the David Jones food hall though. You have more will power than me. :-)

that's such a great idea - my friends and i used to do woolies metro picnic lunches in hyde park, but picnic lunches from DJ food hall seems like a whole different ball game!

ps) if you're looking for somewhere simple, fresh & japanese to eat, try wakana at 2A Broughton Rd Artarmon. the owner used to be head chef at the ANA before it shut down & the black sesame icecream is to die for!

Looks like the perfect catch-up lunch, in and out quickly and sharing good food, better than waiting 10 minutes in line for something nowhere near as delicious!
