Wagyu House Korean BBQ, Croydon
Wagyu. If you ever needed proof that fat is your friend, this is it. All those marbled ribbons of fat render down and flood each piece of meat with mouth-dripping decadence. Sink your teeth into wagyu and be met with one of life's greatest thrills. Soft and supple. Yielding tenderness. Incredible juiciness. It's an eye-closing moment every time.
Self-serve butchery area
It was Suze's post that brought friends and I to Wagyu House in Croydon. Meet-ups these days often involve kids and this place was reasonably kid-friendly. They have high chairs, enough space between tables and a much welcomed bonus of on-site parking.
Wagyu beef family-sized tray $250
Angus combination (at front) $69
Wagyu House is a butcher and restaurant all in one. You enter into a self-serve butchery where you can choose trays of sliced meats and raw seafood. The wagyu beef trays are the most tempting, varying in size and marbling to a peak price of $250. We went with a $125 pack.
Pork, chicken and beef marinated in chilli or teriyaki $7/kg
There are bowls of sliced pork, chicken and beef marinated in chilli sauce or teriyaki. We also spy portions of sliced tongue, octopus, prawns and scallops.
King brown mushrooms, enoki and corn packs $10 each
There are even vegetables ready for the grill - we picked up the corn, enoki and king brown mushroom pack for $10.
Paying for our meats and vegetables before dining
Once you've chosen your meats, you pay at the register. You can either take the meats home or you can pay $5 per person to dine on-site, which includes use of the charcoal barbecue and panchan side dishes. $5 to have someone else do the washing up? Easy decision!
Balcony dining area
There are two dining areas. We went with the smaller balcony dining area off to the side of the butchery, but they also have a much larger room across the driveway, next to the carpark. It's bright and airy here, and the overhead exhausts remove most of the smoke before it has a chance to infiltrate your clothes (or hair!).
Fresh charcoal delivered to the grill
White hot charcoal is delivered to your grill by serious young men. Service can be a little absent-minded - we had to ask to order drinks several times before they got the message and later on, they didn't even ask if we wanted dessert which seemed a shame.
Banchan side dishes included as part of the $5 dining fee
But we can't complain about the variety of banchan we get for our $5 dine-in fee. It's a rainbow of various pickled vegetables, kimchee and sweet glazed potatoes. We also score three different dipping sauces for our meat.
Wagyu meats on the grill
The charcoal is hot enough to get your meats sizzling in no time. Keep the kid away and if you end up having to cook for everyone, make sure you sneak in a few extra "chef's treats" too.
We whiled away several happy hours topping up our iron levels. The wagyu was our favourite by far, but the fatty strips of pork belly weren't far behind. Let's admit it. It was all tasty.

i loveeeeee fresh meat from the butcher for kbbq! it is the best way to have it. I loved it so much I even went to buy my own korean bbq set *adds to the tally* but we all know that is a totally new conversation hehehe

I don't mind a bit of DIY action when it comes to char-grilled meats. Looks great. Pity about the ditsy staff. At least they didn't get in the way by constantly turning the meat for you. That happened to me at a place in Newtown. I was about to thump the silly boy!

$5 is a steal with all that banchan let alone charcoal grill and not having to wash up! I recently discovered Tosung Firewood BBQ which incidentally is a few blocks away from this joint.

This is a really popular spot, not too far from our home. I remember being spoilt for choice too. Seeing the variety on offer and the (prices) it confirms my thoughts, that it's definitely better to go in a large group. Would be much more affordable and allow for variety. Really loved those mushrooms and sides on offer, for me that's what really makes it Korean BBQ

Personally, I think peanut butter and cheesecake are better proofs of fat beign your friend, but each to their own.
Also, $5 for washing up AND all that banchan? YES.

Korean BBQ is always so much fun! Love it, but don't love the BBQ smell that lingers in my hair for long afterwards. I drive past this place all the time, need to go try it out!

Looooove Korean BBQ and just went to Jonga Jip in Eastwood last Sunday.
We're going to have to gve this a go too. Interesting setup however understandable as they're a butcher also.
