Doughnut Time at Central Park, Chippendale
It's Doughnut Time. After teasing Sydneysiders with their wares at Topshop stores, Doughnut Time has finally opened its first Sydney standalone shop in Chippendale. These are American-style yeast-raised donuts, soft and fluffy, that are hand-dipped in glazes that range from burnt butter to sour watermelon glaze. They've got a terrific sense of humour too, with names like The George Costanza, Melon Degeneres and Slim Slady - they all make sense once you see the toppings involved!

Doughnut Time, which started with stores in Brisbane and the Gold Coast, expanded to Sydney only a month ago. Their newest residence is on the lower ground floor of Central Park, in the spot once occupied by Autolyse. They may have only opened late last Friday, but donut fans are already flocking.

The donuts either come filled or glazed. All of them are an easy $6 each.

The shop front offers only a small glimpse into the kitchen out the back where they make all their donuts fresh each day. It's had not to press your nose up against the window as you decide which one/s to order.

And the Cate Blanchett was a firm favourite of the server behind the counter when I visited.

Faced with a daunting abundance of choices, I bought a whole boxful - in the name of research of course.

Let's get one thing out of the way. These donuts are huge. You practically need to unhinge your jaw to take a bite from top to bottom. But as your teeth break through the glaze and then sink into its fluffy core, it's hard not to feel your heart flutter. Watching the donut spring back to its former height is another glorious sight.
The Teaches of Peaces isn't noticeably strong on the peach and raspberry flavour in the glaze, but it's a pretty one, garnished with freeze-fried raspberries for a tangy sweetness.
The George Costanza

These pretzels probably won't make you thirsty but The George Costanza is still a fitting tribute, the lofty donut glazed with caramel and pink salt and crowned with salted pretzels.
Creme de la Creme
Creme brulee custard-filled doughnut with a sticky toffee glaze
The Creme de la Creme really does taste like creme brulee, its custard filling bursting forth from the donut in a deliciously splodgy mess.

The tangle of burnt toffee on top makes it. That crack of toffee is exactly what you need to fool yourself that you're eating a creme brulee and a donut at the exact same time.
The Butternut

Beauty comes in simplicity too. The Butternut ends up being one of my favourites, with its burnt butter glaze that yields a deep and rich nuttiness.

Melon Degeneres
Sour watermelon and cream glaze and sherbet topped with mini choc chips
Is it possible to say Melon Degeneres without cracking a smile? The visuals are brilliant - deep green against a dark candy pink and just enough mini choc chips to look like watermelon seeds.

The sour watermelon glaze isn't too overpowering. I find this one addictive with its interplay of sour and sweet.
Love at First Bite
Nutella-filled with cinnamon sugar
But if you want a donut that doubles as a meal, go for the Love at First Bite. It's a hefty one, substantially heavier that three other donuts combined.

I'm pretty sure they squeezed in a small jar of Nutella inside the one. It's one never-ending pool of gooey Nutella, getting all over your lips that are probably already crusted with sugar crystals.
Doughnut Time will continue its march south with stores due to open in Melbourne in December. In the meantime, we know what time it is...

Perfection - just in time for School Holidays too - the 13 year old will be going for the Slim Shady and the youngest the Nutella creation - I'll be old school with a glazed version. Yummy. xxx

So cool that Sydney has brick and mortar stores solely for doughnuts now!!! Cant wait to try them for myself. I can't help but think they're on the exxy side though, especially when you compare them to US prices.

What a delicious 'research' project hehe ;) I love that doughnuts are coming into their own now and stealing some of the limelight from the cronut. These are the real all-American, yeasted, soft and fluffy doughnuts. Probably one of the best I've tasted!!

I was so happy to read your post last night Helen, as I knew I was going to Central Psrk today to visit Doughnut Time and other places. The butternut is definitely my favourite so far, but there are still so many to try. Bonus freebie today, so that was a lovely surprise. Best doughnuts ever.
