Puffy, Market City, Haymarket Chinatown
I've changed my mind.
When I'd first encountered first encountered Puffy, late last year, the overall experience had left me rather non-plussed.
And yet, on this day, everything is totally different.
"There's a new shop at Market City," announces Tellmemore one day, and suddenly, out-of-the-blue, a paper package is pushed towards me.
I take a bite of the dome-shaped pastry, lips brushing past the sweet biscuit crust, teeth sinking slowly into the hidden belly of custard.
What's this? Chocolate custard? Oh dear. It's chocolately and sweet. It's silky and smooth. It is rather good.
It's enough to make me pause, and yes, yes, I must get out the camera.
Has the recipe changed? Has the pastry crust become crisper? Is it just my imagination or is the custard now served less cold?
Maybe it's the delight of an unexpected treat.
Maybe it's the chocolate custard that does the trick.
Maybe, just maybe, I need to undertake a little more, um, "research".

I had one from Puffy World Square and I didn't like it. It was too sweet and had a strong milk taste.
I will try the chocolate custard and will tell you if I change my mind too =)

Hi Lin - I'm convinced they've changed the recipe. Either that or absence makes the heart grow fonder.
And please, do tell :)

I loved Icy Drinks! It was a pivotal stop for my friend Vanessa and I in between rounds of purikura, for an energising blended passionfruit drink. One time we got a cup which had astrology signs printed on it, and rather than cancer, it said gancer, which to this day is a part of our vocabulary. We have a strange sense of humour.
I did notice the chocolate puffys today on my way down the escalators from East Ocean(yum cha!), and couldn't imagine eating anything else ever, though, now I really want to try them! Thanks Helen!

Hi Miss Helen - I know! I loved Icy Drinks too! They were my #1 supplier for pearl drinks - their taro with pearls was my absolute favourite, and unparalleled anywhere else in Sydney! sob!
Hi Mama Bok - It was pretty tasty. I'm sure they'd both have one, or two!

Just had a try of both flavors and they were fantastic. The sweet gooey custard and flaky pastry go down a treat.

Hi Helen,
I tried chocolate puffy today. I still can't figure out whether they've changed the recipe. But yeah I like it =) It wasn't so sweet like the custard one (which I had last year). Maybe because it was chocolate, who can resist chcolate lol.

Hi jojomo - Glad to hear your encounter was a successful one :) I think it's the sweet biscuit topping that gets me!
Hi Lin - Maybe they have changed the recipe :) I may have to try the vanilla version again. Oh and the chocolate one. Just to make sure, of course!
