Fruit and vegetable markets, Wellington

Visiting the weekly fruit and vegetable markets in Wellington was one of the highlights of my recent trip. I spent a happy couple of hours on the Sunday, browsing first at the Victoria Street Markets and then rounding off my morning at the Waitangi Park Markets.

There was plenty of fresh cheap produce--nothing fancy or gourmet--with the locals out in force stocking up the fridge. I came away with my own bounty of homemade jams and chutneys (feijoa jam, pineapple chutney, pear chutney and rhubarb raspberry jam) from a lovely lady who not only preserved but also baked, slabs of fruit cake and raspberry loaf that I was tempted by but valiantly resisted.

I loved shopping outdoors, picking up produce, dazzled by the vibrancy of colours whilst mingling with locals. It helped too that the sun shone with irresistible chirpiness and the skies were a glorious blue.

What a fantastic market with beautiful vegetables. What did you buy? What did you eat?

Those yams sure look interesting. I thought they were worms! :)

Hi Lannae - I was only in NZ for another two days so I limited myself to a handful of bananas, mandarins and apples. I also came home with the aforementioned jams and chutneys :)

Hi Julia - Apparently the yams are incredibly sweet and tasty. I should've bought some to try. Definitely will next time!

You know I've never seen a yam before and for some reason I thought they'd be white small turnip looking things so there you go!

Hi Goldie - Yams come in all different shapes and sizes. These yams originate from South America. But yes, they can be white and turnip-looking too :)
