Freebie Friday: Win 1 of 3 copies of Voracious

Hungry? Sink your teeth into Voracious, a collection of newly commissioned essays that celebrates "The Best New Australian Food Writing". Many of you will have already read my contribution, ABC, detailing my experiences on growing up as first generation Australian, and my thoughts on reconciling my cultural heritage with my nationality.

The good folk at Hardie Grant have kindly offered up three books as prizes for Grab Your Fork readers. This is your chance to read new pieces from Pauline Nguyen, Matthew Evans, Alan Saunders, Jill Dupleix, Gay Bilson and one of my new favourites, Benjamin Law.

Don't forget that Voracious will be launched tomorrow during the Sydney Writers Festival hosted by AA Gill, the acerbic restaurant reviewer visiting from the UK. If you missed his discussion with Anthony Bourdain at Sydney Town Hall last night, this is your chance to see him - for free!

This is really embarrassing, but when my kids were just babies, I was so busy changing nappies, heating bottles, washing baby clothes & blending veges for baby food, that on one bad day I voraciously scoffed down SIX Time Out chocolate bars, one after the other.
The sugar fix made me feel great at the time, but I never lived it down...over 10 years later, whenever I mention that I'm hungry in my household, my hubby & kids still suggest that I eat "6 Time Outs"!! :))

When I'm hungry I eat hot chips with lots of gravy. I miss the days when they came wrapped in paper.

It has to be penne carbonara, and has been for some years. Nothing seems to be as filling, or as satisfying. This is an exciting competition! I loved what I read the other day ~ may they all write as well as you! :)

Bad habit, skipping breakfast. Waiting for mum who is seeing doctor at medical centre in shopping centre. Saw deli. Bought Haberfield bakery roll and wedge of Buche D'Affinois double cream cheese. Went to collect mum and realised I had devoured entire wedge of cheese and bread. Voracious.(But it was a small wedge.)

On Monday, while I was on the road for work, I put the very hungry caterpillar to shame and took myself by surprise in the process – 7am: 1 big bowl of cornflakes with sultanas and milk, 2 slices of fruit loaf and a cup of tea; 9am: a bacon quiche from the pie shop that I passed; 12md: a hot chicken and gravy roll with pepper; 2.30pm:... KFC wicked wings and hot chips; 5.30pm: macadamia shortbread from the hotel minibar; 7pm: 300g fillet steak and the world’s largest baked potato drowning in sour cream (the waitress kept coming by, asking if I was finished because she’d not seen a “lady” finish the meal. I growled that I would let her know when I was finished ie. When my plate was empty!), a bowl of vegies (supposed to serve 2) and at 9pm: I topped it all off with chocolate fondue, strawberries, shortbread, kiwifruit, marshmallows.
The following morning I started all over again – with eggs benedict with shaved ham off the bone!

Pad Kee Mow from Pron Prohm on Redfern St., very nice! Or a good old Chinese Noodle House with the lot: fried dumplings, stir-fried noodles, special hot eggplant and cucumber salad! Or a nice Pizza in Haberfield... yum!

(set to tune of "my favourite things") Cheese toasties, potatoes all roasty. Piping hot chestnuts and sourdough loafies. Schnitzel and croissants and chocolates galore, voraciously eaten til I can't eat no
    more!

My chicken roast dinner complete with: a lemon, bacon and herb stuffing, and all the veg - crunchy golden roast potatoes, sticky sweet potato, collapsing chunks of roast pumpkin, caramelised roast carrot, parsnip and just-cooked through, tender crisp green beans all swimming in (made-from the roast chicken pan) gravy - not that instant gravy rubbish. And, if my husband was in on the act there would be roast chokos because for a reason unbeknown to me - that is his favourite roasted vegetable.

Today, my voracious appetite is calmed momentarily by a tin of spaghetti with extra cheese melted through it and a hot cheese and bacon bread roll. This is a VERY temporary "fix" while I urge on tonight's dinner time because I'll be making Cantonese bbq pork and fried rice! Ohhhhh yum!

Are you sure you want to keep the competition open until 15th June? I could go on forever and ever without pausing to consider my next mouthful....
a home made tapas feast - starting with marinated bbq baby octopus and prawns and finishing with the last few drops of sangria when I can fit only a few drops of liquid into the "gaps" in my belly and I have undone the top button of my trousers and pulled my top back down to hide the evidence!

I will dig in to a trusty jaffle. Avocado, ham, tomato, feta and a squirt of lemon juice. Not the most sophisticated meal, but it makes me smile :)

Has put my co-workers off for years, but my mid-morning snack is tuna, whole egg mayo and onion atop either toasted sourdough or a cheese scone (washed down with a couple of pieces of chocolate covered licorice!). Sounds gross, but hits the spot!

I scoff anything and everything that I can find... mostly chocolate, including mint slice bickies, coffee ice cream drizzled with Kahlua, and salt and vinegar chips which I share with the cat coz they're her favourite flavour.
ps, i'm lactose intolerant so I really pay for my binges.

A huge bowl of whole oat porridge(made with milk) containing a half a dozen almonds, a few spoonfuls of LSA(ground linseed, almonds and sunflower seed mix), a generous sprinkling of cinnamon and a handful of frozen blueberries tossed into the saucepan at the last minute..I will mix it up with a splotch of honey from time to time.
In summer I will have the same mix but uncooked/as muesli.
Very satisfying for both the guts and the health-freak in me.
