Southside Farmers Market, Canberra

Yellow peaches at the Apple Shed stall at Southside Farmers Market in Canberra

Spending a weekend in Canberra? Add this farmers market to your list. The Southside Farmers Market has about 60 stalls every Sunday morning, set within the grounds of Canberra College. It's a good-sized market, large enough to happily browse for an hour or two, but small enough to maintain a community feel.

We stopped by on a recent mini-break to Canberra and swooped on a bounty of cherries grown in Young. There's a terrific range of produce, artisan products and cooked foods ready-to-eat. We found that stallholders were super friendly and patient too.

We couldn't resist a garland of this Australian garlic grown in Wagga Wagga, and spruiked by our new best mate, Brian.

Baked goods, hot foods and snacks are interweaved throughout the market. Savoury cannoli sounds genius.

It wasn't until I got home that I realised Backa is actually based in Queensland, but I'm still happy with my haul of wood-smoked fetta, prosciutto and a massive chilli salami aptly named The Godfather.

Hot foods included freshly made crepes, gozleme, gyoza and pies but I only had eyes for the Ecuadorian stall selling tamale and pupusas.

My chicken tamale was a piping hot parcel, ladled over with optional chilli sauce.

The pupusa are available in variations of cheese, beans, cheese and beans, or cheese and spinach.

Lunch: chicken tamale and a cheese and fried bean pupusa

Lunch, ok it was breakfast, was an Ecuadorian feast of chicken tamale and a cheese and fried pupusa - shared of course.

And dessert had to be a Bombolini donut. Bombolini is probably one of the most popular stalls, with their donuts regularly selling out before the market closes.

Flavours include burnt butter toffee; white chocolate and raspberry; strawberries and cream; and dark chocolate and hazelnut but our favourite had to be the vanilla and wildflower donut. It's the bomb-olini! (groan)
