Belvedere Hotel, Sydney
Sometimes all you need is a burger.
Despite the gleaming renovations and air of sophistication, we're pleased to find a reasonably cheap and cheerful bar menu at the Belvedere Hotel.
The ground floor bar menu is a mix of burgers, snacks and a pizzas, along with a selection of more substantial main meals, including slow-braised lamb shanks, chicken schnitzel and fish and chips. Apart from the 400g grass-fed T-bone steak at $25, everything else tends to hover around the $10-$16 mark. A $9 express lunch features rotating specials of the day.
The bar is bright and airy, bathed with natural light during the day, which can feel a little at odds with the moody elegance of its deep timbers, flocked wallpaper and slate grey colour scheme.
Scotch fillet steak sandwich $16
We order at the bar - our meals delivered to the table by waitstaff, although I have to get up anyway for tomato and barbecue sauce, which is stored in self-dispense pump bottles on the counter.
The scotch fillet steak sandwich is surprisingly tender, the bread featuring tantalising grill marks, with rocket leaves and tomato nestled.
Belvedere burger $14
My Belvedere burger is a tower of beef patty, tomato, rocket and bacon spilling out from the burger bun hat perched jauntily on top.
I pipe on a squiggle of barbecue sauce, but really I didn't need to - the slather of red onion relish is deliciously more-ish and sweet.
The burger patty itself is also a winner, chunky and textured, although the middle of the burger seems a touch cold, even though it is cooked through. Bacon is more seared than crisp, but the chips are crunchy.
Fast food or bar burger? I know what I'd choose.

Strangest thing is that I woke up this morning and the thought of my normal sweets-focused diet made me feel queasy. I'm not normally into meat, but this looks so. so. good right now. *swoon*

I totally agree with your first sentence!!! And if you mean you'd choose burger bar, I'm with you there too. Somehow the chips are also better.

Hey Helen, I love the look of that burger, but a little too hard to eat... I think I'd go for the yummy steak sandwich instead! Yum!

Hi John - Eggs and foie gras for breakfast? A steak as well would be just plain greedy!
